About Me

Who is Assoc. Prof. Dr. Macit Bitargil?

Macit Bitargil was born in 1980 in Antakya, Turkey. He completed his primary and secondary
education in Antakya, graduating as the top student in his class. In 1997, he moved to Istanbul to
begin his medical education and graduated with high honors. After completing medical school as
valedictorian, he pursued his specialization in Cardiovascular Surgery at Istanbul University
Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine between 2006 and 2012. His graduation thesis won the First Prize in
Turkey in the thesis competition organized by the Turkish Medical Association.
In 2012, he relocated to Kars to fulfill his compulsory medical service and began working as a
cardiovascular surgeon at Kafkas University. During his three-year tenure there, he played a key role
in establishing the cardiovascular surgery department, launching and managing open-heart surgeries,
and setting up the cardiac intensive care unit. He trained two residents and contributed significantly
to performing surgeries that had never been conducted before in the region. For his scientific
contributions, he earned the title of Assistant Professor and was honored with the March 14 Honor
Award for his service to the university hospital.
In 2015, Macit Bitargil returned to Istanbul and began working as an attending cardiovascular surgeon
at Şişli Hamidiye Etfal Training and Research Hospital. In 2016, one of his operations performed for an
aortic aneurysm case was published in the Texas Heart Institute Journal and later earned a place in
the Guinness World Records.
From 2020 to 2021, he worked for over a year as a fellow at the Mayo Clinic’s Department of
Cardiothoracic Surgery in the United States. During this period, he participated in numerous surgeries
including heart transplantation, assist device implantation, minimally invasive valve procedures,
complex coronary bypasses, and aortic aneurysm/dissection operations. He also successfully
completed several scientific projects and published two original surgical techniques he developed in
prestigious journals such as The Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery (JTCVS) and the
European Society of Cardiology (ESC) journal.
After returning to Turkey, he was awarded the title of Associate Professor in 2021 for his scientific
contributions in the field. Between 2022 and 2024, he worked under the Acıbadem Healthcare Group
at Acıbadem Fulya, Acıbadem Taksim, and International Acıbadem Hospitals. He currently practices at
his private clinic in Nişantaşı, Istanbul.
Dr. Bitargil has authored numerous national and international scientific publications, receiving over
150 citations in total. He serves as a peer reviewer for the Turkish Journal of Thoracic and
Cardiovascular Surgery and the Anatolian Journal of Cardiology, and holds the Turkish Society of
Cardiovascular Surgery Board Certification. He has successfully performed hundreds of open-heart
and vascular surgeries.
He married in 2017, has one child, and divorced in 2022. His hobbies include playing chess, piano,
practicing yoga, running, and boxing.
