About Me

Who is Assoc. Prof. Dr. Macit Bitargil?

Prof. Dr. Macit Bitargil was born in Antakya in 1980. He completed his primary and high school education in Antakya and graduated as the valedictorian of his school. In 1997, he came to Istanbul and started his medical education at the medical faculty, and was awarded the high honors award upon graduation. After graduating first in his class from the medical faculty, he completed his specialization training at Istanbul University Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty, Department of Cardiovascular Surgery between 2006 and 2012. His graduation thesis was awarded the first place prize in Turkey in the thesis competition held by the Turkish Medical Association.

Settling in Kars in 2012 to fulfill his mandatory service, he started working as a cardiovascular surgery specialist at Kars Kafkas University. During his 3-year stay in Kars, he took part in the establishment phase of the cardiovascular surgery clinic there, played an important role in the initiation and execution of open-heart surgeries and the establishment of the cardiac surgery intensive care unit, trained two assistants, and made great contributions to performing many surgeries that had not been performed before in the history of Kars. Following his scientific studies, he earned the title of Assistant Professor Doctor, and due to his contributions to the medical faculty hospital, he was awarded the March 14th Honor Award.

Prof. Dr. Macit Bitargil returned to Istanbul in 2015 and started working as an attending surgeon at Şişli Hamidiye Etfal Training and Research Hospital. In 2016, a surgery he performed due to an aortic aneurysm was first published in the Texas Heart Institute Journal and subsequently qualified to enter the Guinness Book of Records. Between 2020 and 2021, he worked as a fellow at the Mayo Clinic (United States) Cardiothoracic Surgery Clinic for over a year. During his time there, he participated in many operations, especially regarding heart transplantation, assist devices, minimally invasive valve surgeries, complicated coronary bypass, and aortic aneurysm/dissection surgeries, and successfully completed many scientific projects. In addition, two surgical methods he developed himself at the Mayo Clinic were published in distinguished scientific journals such as JTCVS and ESC. After returning to Turkey, due to the scientific activities he carried out in his field, he earned the title of Associate Professor from Şişli Etfal Hospital in 2021. Between 2022 and 2024, he transferred to the Acıbadem Healthcare Group and worked within Acıbadem Fulya, Acıbadem Taksim, and International Acıbadem hospitals. He is currently working in his own private practice in Nişantaşı, Istanbul.

Prof. Dr. Macit Bitargil has dozens of scientific studies produced in the scientific field of cardiovascular surgery, conducted nationally and internationally, which have received over 380 citations in total. He serves as a scientific reviewer for the Turkish Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and the Anatolian Journal of Cardiology. He also holds the Certificate of Competence from the Turkish Society of Cardiovascular Surgery. He has managed hundreds of successful operations in the fields of open-heart surgery and vascular surgery.

He married in 2017 and is the father of one child. He divorced in 2022. His hobbies include playing chess, playing the piano, doing yoga, running, and boxing.
